Lift a ban

If you are concerned you may have been the victim of a data breach or potential fraud, you can place a ban on your Experian credit report now.

Your Experian credit report is designed to give your credit providers information they need to consider when assessing your application for credit. However, if you’ve been the victim of fraud or if you’re concerned that you’ll likely be a victim of fraud, you can ask us to place a temporary ban on your Experian Credit Report. The initial ban period is for 21 days and the ban extension period is 12 months. It’s free to request a ban and any subsequent extensions and there is no limit to the number of times a ban can be extended. If you need to extend your ban, please contact us 10 days prior to the ban ending.

Additionally, your ban request, with your consent, can also be placed on your credit reports with other credit reporting bodies (CRBs) – namely Equifax and Illion. Please note that Experian is not responsible for the actions of the other CRBs but will simply share your request. The other CRBs may contact you directly to confirm the actions they have taken or any additional information they may require from you.

What happens during a ban

You can still order a copy of your credit report at any time, despite a ban being in place. During a ban we won’t use or disclose any information from your Experian Credit Report. If an organisation asks us for a copy of your Experian Credit Report, we’ll let them know there is a ban in place. This ensures they are aware and alerted to the potential fraud risk on your account.

Lifting a ban and applying for credit during a ban

While this doesn’t mean you’re exempt from applying for credit, during a ban a credit provider won’t have access to your Experian Credit Report.
If you need your ban lifted, you can submit your request below.

Before we can process your request and to protect your identity, you will be required to provide the credit reporting information we hold on you from ONE of the following identification documents. Please ensure you have acceptable photo identification ready before completing the ban lift request.

Photo Identification Options:

  • Current Australian Driver’s Licence
  • Current Australian Passport
  • Australian Medicare Card (all versions)
  • Centrelink Card (all versions)

Once the lift has been processed, the ban removal may occur overnight.

If the ban request was also sent to the other CRBs, please contact them directly to request the ban be lifted on their credit reports.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our post channel for requesting a ban on your Experian Credit Report is currently unavailable until further notice. Please request a ban online or call us on 1300 783 684 between 9:00am-5:00pm AEST Monday to Friday.
